This chapter gives some important backstory information. We learn why Jean Valjean ended up in prison and how over the years he accumulated a greater sentence. This chapter also serves as guide to begin to understand Jean Valjean's character and why he is who he is, broken and empty. From becoming an orphan at a young age to losing his only remaining family in his mid-twenties, there is no doubt he has lived a dreadful life.
