LES MIS TODAY

The controversial events in Les Misérables are still apparent in today's society. Much like in the book the death penalty is still a punishment in the U.S. and it has been used only in extreme cases, but there have been instances in the history of the U.S. where the death penalty has been sentenced unjustifiably, mainly towards people of color. This brings me to my next point, the U.S. has recently faced great threats among itself. One of those was the important anti-racism BLM movement, which I believe that racism was not mentioned directly in the book, but was definitely around and in a much darker period and form, slavery. And the most life-altering event for all humans that was only briefly mentioned in the book in the form of an epidemic, and that is Covid-19. Covid-19 has undoubtedly affected the majority of the world in a way and it has affected more than every day life, it has also played a huge role in politics. The eyes of the world were focused on the U.S. elections and that is mainly due to our poor handling of the Covid-19 pandemic, of course there are other issues like universal health care and civil rights movements, but Covid-19 is going to be the biggest challenge for the president. And in no way do I say that to invalidate or demean the other pressing issues and injustices because that's totally not the case and in my opinion they are just as important, but the whole world is looking for leadership from the U.S. because this nation's choices will affect the whole world in some way.
