LES MIS BOOK 2: CH 1

Jean Valjean is a freed prisoner and has been traveling for days and over 12 leagues. When he arrives in the town of Digne he goes to an inn and asks for food which he will pay, he was denied service and kicked out. He goes on to seek refuge at another inn and is accepted at first but then again as his identity was revealed he was kicked out. He was hit by kids with stones and even turned down from a prison. Jean visits a home with a family and is threatened by a father with a gun. He mistook a dog's kennel for a worker's hut and left as soon as the dog showed his possession over the kennel. In hopes of finding shelter in the fields outside of town he left town but turned back when he saw that it was worse than the town. Giving up, he lay on a stone bench when a noble woman came up to him and directed him to the bishop's home.
